German Auto Industry Plans Temporary Chip Information Platform to Ease Supply Risks

Germany’s automotive sector, reeling from the Nexperia semiconductor crisis, is launching a temporary ‘Chip Information Platform’ to mitigate supply chain disruptions, industry sources told Reuters. Coordinated by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), the platform will enable real-time data sharing among automakers, suppliers, and governments on chip inventories, alternative sourcing, and risk assessments.
The move comes amid escalating tensions: The Dutch government’s seizure of Nexperia last month—citing national security over its Chinese parent Wingtech—prompted Beijing to ban exports of 80% of its chips, vital for vehicle electronics. VDA President Hildegard Mueller warned of ‘considerable production restrictions’ and potential stoppages, with inventories lasting just weeks. Volkswagen has paused Golf and Tiguan output at Wolfsburg, while Bosch prepares furloughs at Salzgitter and Mercedes scrambles for alternatives.
The platform, set for rollout next week, aims to foster transparency and accelerate approvals for substitutes, drawing on lessons from the 2021-2023 shortage that slashed €100 billion from GDP. BMW’s cloud-based monitoring could integrate, per AWS insights. ‘This is a pragmatic step to avert a full crisis,’ a VDA spokesperson said, urging EU intervention. On X, users decry the ‘geopolitical chip war’ hitting EVs hardest.
As U.S. tariffs and Chinese rare earth curbs compound woes, the initiative signals a push for resilient, regionalized supply chains—potentially reshaping Europe’s auto future.
